Starting a new job or returning to a career when you are a parent can be challenging. Working parents often face this problem. They have to look after their children and simultaneously go to their jobs. Working parent finds insufficient time and low energy levels after returning from work. Now-a-days women are equally working like men to fulfill their family financial requirements. They are taking up professions in all the fields as they are going for higher educations. In a family, if both are working parents, they have no or little time for children.

Why do we all put up with stress? Why do we lead such stressful lives, as working people, and more importantly, as working parents? Why don’t we all take a step towards alleviating stress and related disorders?

If you agree with me, here are some tips for you that will help you handle the stress  in your life, so that you will be able to handle a relatively healthier, happier and a stress free life.

Spend time with your child!

Although you have less time for your children, you should not ignore them. As a working parent, you might have tired to play with them or spend time with your children. But, working parents should still make some time to spend time with children, inquire their activities at school, and inquire about their studies, exams and friends.

As a working parent, you should not avoid going to your child’s school. Attend school functions and games your children are participating. This provides encouragement to your children and also helps in thinking that they are more important to you than your work.

Lack of time!

Due to lack of time, some working parents try to pamper their children with expensive toys, gifts and clothes. But, you should remember that no toy or gift can compensate with parent’s love, care and responsibility.

Child can be spoiled!

As a working parent, if you do not spend time for your children, they fall into bad company and have high chances of getting into bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. The reason is your child feel lonely without the parents support and care and they look forward to their friends to get out from loneliness.

Now-a-days children are using television and computers mostly. If you do not accompany or spend time with your children, they get habituated and watch wrong things because nobody is there to watch them or control them.

Schedule your timings!

Working parents should schedule their work timings suitable for their children. Mother and father should schedule their timings in such a way that one of them should be at home when your children return home from school.

If you extra work at office, inform the other parent to come home early so that children don’t feel alone.

Other opportunities! If you have difficulty in scheduling the timings, either of you can decide other work opportunities which can give time to spend with your children. There are flexible working hours such as jobs on the internet, multilevel marketing, insurance, computer programming and telemarketing.

If you are making this type of arrangement, your child receives necessary guidance, support and proper development.

Here are some more guidelines to help your children grow up healthy and happy:

Show your love. Every day, tell your children: “I love you. You’re special to me.” Give lots of hugs and kisses.

Listen when your children talk. Listening to your children tells them that you think they’re important and that you’re interested in what they have to say.

Make your children feel safe. Comfort them when they’re scared. Show them you’ve taken steps to protect them.

Provide order in their lives. Keep a regular schedule of meals, naps and bedtimes. If you have to change the schedule, tell them about the changes ahead of time.

Praise your children. When your children learn something new or behave well, tell them you’re proud of them.

Criticize the behavior, not the child. When your child makes a mistake, don’t say, “You were bad.” Instead, explain what the child did wrong. For example, say: “Running into the street without looking isn’t safe.” Then tell the child what to do instead: “First, look both ways for cars.”

Be consistent. Your rules don’t have to be the same ones other parents have, but they do need to be clear and consistent. (Consistent means the rules are the same all the time.) If two parents are raising a child, both need to use the same rules. Also, make sure baby-sitters and relatives know (and follow) your family rules.

Spend time with your children. Do things together, such as reading, walking, playing and cleaning house. What children want most is your attention. Bad behavior is usually an attempt to get your attention.

  • Drink lot of water through the day, not only to replenish moisture lost to the heat and sweat but also to help flush toxins out of the body and keep skin looking clear and lustrous. Herb or spice teas, made with skin-enhancing ingredients, offer added therapeutic benefit. Choose cooling herbs and spices such as mint, cardamom and fennel.
  • Eat lot of fruits, vegetables and herbs, which supply the skin with essential nutrients and come with free-radical fighting antioxidant properties while they help keep your skin cool. Carrots, lettuce, summer squash such as zucchini, celery, asparagus and leafy greens are good vegetable choices.   • Milk is a cooling beverage that also supplies nutrients to your skin and helps to keep it from drying out. Drink a cup of milk every day, and also combine milk with ingredients like almond meal and rose water to make a balancing skin cleanser.
  • Get plenty of quality rest each night. Keep your bedroom cool, dark and comfortable and sleep on cotton or linen sheets. Get to bed early and awaken early for clear healthy skin and sparkling eyes.
  • When you feel stressed, angry or frustrated, your skin will show it over time as furrows and small lines and breakouts. Practice calming yoga poses or meditation to stay serene and help your body and mind manage stress. Use essential oils, such as rose, sandalwood and lavender to keep mind and heart balanced.
  • Keep your skin nourished with a herbal moisturizer. Look for ayurvedic formulations that contain skin-friendly herbs such as sandalwood, turmeric, brahmi, amla and aloe vera. At least once a week, treat yourself to a fruit or vegetable mask appropriate for your skin type. Cucumbers, avocados, apricots and papayas lend themselves well to homemade masks.
  • Use some fruit or vegetable and blend with some yogurt, honey, oatmeal and lemon juice or rosewater and apply evenly to the face. Let stay for 15-20 minutes and then rinse off with lukewarm water. It will make the skin shining.
  • Eyes and feet should be given extra care everyday. Splash lots of cool water on your eyes. Soak some cotton pads in cool water or rose water and place them over closed eyes for 10 minutes.

Home-made summer skin care

1. Summer facial bleach

Ingredients: 4 tbsp milk, 1 tbsp honey, 2 tbsp lemon juice.

Mix all the ingredients and apply the mixture evenly on the tanned areas for 15 minutes. Once dried, wash with cold water. Works best for greasy and oily skin.

2. Yogurt and honey cleanser

Ingredients : 4 tbsp plain yogurt, 2 tbsp honey, 3 tbsp lime juice

Mix all the ingredients. Add a little cornstarch if you think the paste needs thickening. Apply on your face and massage for 2-3 minutes. Rinse with cold water.
For an all- natural exfoliation…

Excessive heat added with dry winds, overheat the body and it’s the face that suffers the most. The delicate tissues get damaged and the outer layer of the skin bears dirt deposits in the clogged pores leading to an excessively rough, wrinkled and dry skin. A quick and easy session of exfoliation is all that you need in case of such beauty emergencies!

1. Oatmeal exfoliating scrub

Ingredients: 1 tsp fine oatmeal, 1 tsp baking soda

Mix the ingredients in enough water to make a thick paste. Rub over face for 2-3 minutes, rinse and pat dry. It’s suitable for all skin types.

2. Curd and gram flour scrub

Ingredients: 1 tspn gram flour, 1 tspn lemon juice, 2-3 mint leaves, toned curd, a small piece of grated carrot

Mix all the ingredients to form a past and apply on your face. Rub in round motions to clean the deep rooted impurities.

Running shoes: Choosing the right running shoes is a must whether you’re a beginner, social runner or professional athlete. Look for shoes that match your foot shape – flat, normal or high arch – as well as ones that match the surface you plan to run on.

Choose the right socks: Instead of running in your cotton favourites, look for modern fabrics that are designed to ‘wick’ the moisture away from your feet, keeping them dry and blister free. Avoid running in socks with holes in them.

Choose the right running clothes: Running clothes can make the world of difference to your performance and comfort during your run. While cotton t-shirts and shorts are comfortable and soak up the sweat, they retain moisture and therefore become heavy. Some cotton pieces of clothing can also causes chafing, which can make the run uncomfortable. Today, high tech clothing materials are designed to ‘wick’ sweat away from the skin to the outer surface so that it can evaporate, helping to keep you comfortable during your run.

Choose the right bra: Bras keep a woman’s breasts supported, reduce the amount of jiggling and help to prevent injury to breast tissue when running. A bra should fit firmly, however the rib band should not restrict breathing and the straps should be wide enough to support the breasts without causing ridges on your shoulders. When choosing a running bra, try on several sizes and brands to make sure you find the one most suited to your body. Sports bras with specific cup sizes are preferable to the generic one-size-fits-all offerings. Make sure your sports bra is flexible, by bending forward and backwards and moving side-to-side to check that it doesn’t roll up.

Limit the accessories: Running accessories such as water bottle belts and iPods can affect your running stride. If you’re concentrating on not losing your accessories while you run, then your body will inevitably adjust to make sure it doesn’t happen. The best stride is one that is smooth and natural, so if your accessories are getting in the way of this, then it’s best to leave them at home.

Fiction: Lifting weights makes women too bulky
This myth has resulted in a lot of women avoiding strength training, when in reality they don’t need to. Women lack the testosterone needed to bulk up. Ironically, two to three days per week of strength training helps improve strength and endurance.

Fact: Exercise improves sleep
Exercise can reduce the likelihood of waking during the night, helping you enjoy a deeper sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, as this can have the opposite effect, disrupting your sleep instead of improving it.

Fiction: No pain, no gain
Many people hold the view that if they don’t feel sore after a workout they haven’t done enough. This is completely untrue. While exercise can be intense and sometimes leave you with some muscle aches, pain is not required for a successful workout. Pain can actually be your body’s way of warning you that you have done too much and injured yourself. Always listen to your body and rest when it tells you to.

Fact: It’s OK to get bored with exercise
Just like your mind, your body and muscles need a challenge. Doing the same exercises everyday is likely to result in boredom. Keep your workouts interesting by mixing them up – try running and swimming, cycling and yoga. Variety can reduce the likelihood of boredom, it will also ensure your muscles keep adapting to the training.

Fiction: Exercise is too expensive
Anyone can afford to exercise – you don’t need expensive gym memberships or a personal trainer to improve your fitness. There are plenty of parks to run, jump, hop and skip through, while it doesn’t cost a cent to take a swim in the ocean. If you’re looking for motivation, grab a friend and use each other for support.

Fact: Exercise takes time
Exercise may take time, but that’s well-invested time. While it’s recommended to include structured moderate-to-vigorous exercise regularly, you can also increase incidental exercise by standing up. Stand up from your desk each hour and stretch. Take the stairs instead of the lift, offer to go on the office coffee run or walk to speak to your work colleagues instead of emailing. Remember to sit less, move more and move often.
